The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomens Guild Dramatic Society Production of:

We Found Love and an Exquisite Set of Porcelain Figurines Aboard the SS Farndale Avenue - November 2009

Flushed, and following on from the dizzy heights of their previous successes(?), the stalwart veterans of the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomens Guide Dramatic Society are posed to conquer yet another dramatic idiom.  In romantic vein, with their latest production set aboard the luxury ocean-going liner SS Farndale Avenue for their excursion into the world of thirties musical comedy à la Noël and Gertie, the ladies prove that the age of elegance, glamour and enchantment is not dead … well, not quite anyway.

Unfortunately, circumstances almost beyond their control threaten to wreck the evening’s entertainment: Stage Manager Gordon who manages almost everything from Flapper to Noël Nightingale, playwright extraordinaire, but never quite the stage; and a double-booked venue that requires all Mrs Reece’s resources to rid them of a persistent DJ.  Nonetheless the ladies and Gordon, in true Farndale form, soar above such mundane matters to present a couple of catchy numbers and a stunning underwater sequence! .

Comedic mayhem with Farndale crew

If you love community theatre, you’ll get a kick out of Kucom’s latest.

For any local play enthusiast there is only one thing better than community theatre – and that’s a community theatre production about a community theatre production.

Directed by the talented Heather MacTavish, this play will certainly split your sides from one bumbling moment to the next. Written by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr, this production – titled We Found Love and an Exquisite Set of Porcelain Figurines Aboard the SS Farndale – is possibly the final one in the Farndale series.

Meet Mrs Reece (Kucom’s Brenda Price), Thelma (Sue Stock) and Felicity (Maureen Coleman): By day they are three British middle-class housewives, yet by night they are the stars of their local dramatic society’s play.

Together, nothing will stand in their way, not even a double booking at their local hall on the night of their debut. Determined the show must go on, the trio along with last minute understudy Gordon (Stan Hillard), sabotage the double booking (a dance music night presented by disc jockey Kelly Gregg) to bring to life their under-rehearsed tales of glamour, romance and enchantment aboard the SS Farndale.

Play highlights include a glow-in-the-dark underwater scene, group song-and-dance routines, wardrobe malfunctions, missed cues, late entrances, forgotten lines and a very “real” stabbing injury. Well done to the Kucom crew for bringing us this gem of a play. We Found Love... is one of the best displays of talent I’ve seen by Kucom to date. I take my hat off to the team for successfully acting as a cast who cannot act, in a play about a play!

Catch this side-splitting production at the Kucom Theatre Playhouse, Shakespeare Street, at 8pm on November 13, 14, 18, 20 and 21. To book, phone the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre on 4961 9700. or book online.
