The original Mackay Community Theatre was formed in 1947. Along the way, amoeba-like, it split in two when Kudos Theatre broke away from the parent company in the 1970s, and then the two re-merged, the Ku from Kudos and the Com from Community forming today's Kucom Theatre Inc.

PAST PRODUCTIONS ... |
In the 60-odd years of its existence Mackay's Community Theatre has occupied various locations around the city, most recently the Kucom Playhouse in Shakespeare Street opposite the Mackay Showgrounds and next door to Mackay's largest car dealership, Auto Corner.
But all that changed in August 2010 when the Kucom Committee accepted an offer from Auto Corner to purchase the land on which the theatre stood. The decision to sell was made only after much discussion and consultation, and were sorry to part with the old building as it held many warm memories - but the building was old and needed endless maintenance, and it was time to move on.

Thanks to the generosity of purchaser John Glanville, we were able to present the 2011 season in the old theatre, but in December 2011, at the close of Heather MacTavish's production of Night Watch, the lights went out for the last time and the old Shakespeare Street Playhouse ceased to be. But Kucom Theatre will go on, and we will find a new home. Watch this space for breaking news .....
