'Triple Treat 2010' - a season of Australian one-act plays
The auditions brought out lots of familiar faces as well as some exciting new talent, and despite a shortage of willing males (these Mackay men are such shrinking violets when it comes to getting up on stage), our directors have happily cast all plays to their satisfaction.
Sue Stock's play Too Close for Comfort, by Chris Hodson, features Rowena Marshall and Geoff Stewart-Maclean (both last seen at Kucom in Rumours in November 2006 and most welcome back on our stage after such a long absence), Bella Raymond (who worked on the youth theatre production Blurred in 2007), and enthusiastic young newcomer Connor Bashford.
Lee, written by Ken Cotterill and directed by Jim Kelly, features John Atkinson, Sheryn Dempster and Connor Bashford - well, we did say he was enthusiastic ... ! John Atkinson is well known to Kucom patrons, having appeared in productions too numerous to mention, and Sheryn is returning to the stage after having worked backstage on many productions and appeared in the chorus of several musicals with the Mackay Musical Comedy Players.
Strictly Professional is an original play, a one-woman comedy written and performed by Kucom's very own Lucy Dobson. Lucy made her debut at Kucom in 2007 in Secret Bridesmaids' Business and more recently appeared in Tessa King's production of Bazaar and Rummage in July 2008 and also in last year's one-act play In Good Spirits by another local playwright, Paul Vander Loos.
However, there's still a need for crew to operate sound and lighting, look after props and do all those other necessary little things without which no theatre production can succeed. The actors are just the tip of the iceberg - it's all the hard work going on underneath the surface that keeps them afloat. Triple Treat will hit the Kucom stage on Wednesday 14 April. Season dates are: 14th, 16th, 17th, 21st, 23rd and 24th April 2010, and bookings can be made through the MECC - phone them on 4961 9777 or book online.
